Cerf, Internet Inventor Wants Internet To Reach Into Space
"Cyberspace going outer space"
: The man known as the father of the Internet said on Wednesday that the
: outgrowing planet Earth and the time had come to take the information
superhighway to outer
: Vinton Cerf, senior vice-president of MCI Communications Corp, said
that meant the domain
: name debate raging in the Internet community had to start considering
adding new names such as
: ".Earth" or ".Mars."
: Cerf said it would soon be possible to send real-time science data on
the Internet from a space
: mission orbiting another planet such as Mars.
What about that multi-million mile net-lag?
: "If you think 100 years from now, it is entirely possible that what
will be purely research 50 years
: from now will become commercial 100 years from now. The Internet was
the same -- it started
: as pure research but now it is commercialized."
Right idea, but rather limited vision. But then again he probably
didn't foresee the explosive impact of his TCP/IP research either.

Gratuitous political statement, look here ->
"I think we are all trying too hard to push space
versus finding the pulls that attract people and their money."
"The heavens reward great deeds, not excuses."
