Boeing tests large model of Space Maneuver Vehicle
A 9/10 scale unpowered version of the X-40A
August 11, 1998
Web posted at: 7:43 p.m. EDT (2343 GMT)
SEATTLE (Reuters) -- An unmanned space vehicle that one day
could be used for satellite deployments and military
reconnaissance made its first test flight Tuesday, cruising
to a landing after being towed to 9,000 feet, Boeing Co.
officials said.
The U.S. Air Force X-40A, a 90 percent working scale model
of the planned Space Maneuver Vehicle, was lifted by
helicopter for the planned 90-second test of its navigation
and control system in southern New Mexico.
If Congress decides to continue the project after an initial
$5.3 million test phase, a full-scale model ultimately could
be built and released from the space shuttle for further
testing.
Ultimately the vehicles could be launched by booster rockets
into orbit 22,000 miles above the Earth and remain aloft for
up to a year, zipping to different trouble spots as needed
before cruising back to Earth much like the space shuttle.
The initial test vehicle, which looks much like a miniature
version of the space shuttle, is just 22 feet long with a
wingspan of 12 feet. It was designed mainly to test
aerodynamics and guidance systems but has no propulsion
system of its own.
John Fuller, manager of the project for Boeing's Phantom
Works research arm, said he was pleased with the test at
Holloman Air Force Base.
"Our next step will be to demonstrate the vehicle's
capabilities both in the atmosphere and space," he said in a
statement.
