Abstract:Some elements for building a sustainable lunar colony in the South Polar Region are presented. Two areas of interest are the near Earth facing Malapert Mountain ranges at 85 degrees parallel and 0 degrees longitude and the Shivashakti-Saraswathy Plateau emanating from the west-southwest rim of Shackleton crater at the South Pole. It is suggested that the first colony projects be initiated at Malapert in direct visual contact with the Earth and that the second phase of development be carried out around Shackleton crater located at the South Pole.
